Gardening

No matter where we have planted our family, we have always tried to follow the counsel of our Church leaders and plant a garden to help sustain ourselves.

Here in the Northwest, the major problems we face are: bad soil, lack of knowledge and little sunlight in our yard. So, this year, I attended a gardening class and gleaned knowledge from the experts. Thank you, experts!

We located the sunniest spot in our yard, prepared our soil as taught, and planted our vegies -- most of which were started indoors about a month earlier. We planted radishes, beans, zucchini, squash, sunflowers, cucumbers, and tomatoes. In the front, in the sunniest section of our yard, we planted watermelon and cantaloupe.

Here are the results thus far:

We have about 5 watermelons. I do not know if they will ripen, but I am excited just watching them grow!

We have at least 8 cantaloupe.

Our tomato plants got so big that we had to tie them up.
We have had a great harvest! I've already put up 10 quarts of squash and made
3 quarts of salsa.

We have also planted grapes, cherries, apples, and blueberries for enjoying each year. It is a lot of work, but I really love it.
