Dia de Iindependencia . . .

Here is an excerpt from Elder Burnham's September 8, 2009 email:

I have to be fast today. Every place in the city is closed and this is the only computer in the whole city open, and only for 10 more minutes. Today is Independence Day in Brasil which is really just a big excuse to drink and make churrasco because the story of Brasilian independence is that an ex-Portuguese king yelling "Liberty or death!" at nothing and declaring the independence. One more reason to party, also, is that Brasil just beat Argentina in soccer - so basically everyone is drunk today.

This week was very... normal. Nothing super special. It was good. We taught some good lessons and have some good people who are making progress towards baptism. One thing very special was to see some of the people I baptized bear testimony on Sunday. Fátima, who was baptized last week, bore her testimony about the changes in her life and how she didn't even have the will to live; but, since the day that we showed up there at her house, everything changed. Vinicius also bore testimony--the young man I baptized about 4 months ago. He is a stud and is doing seminary, received the priesthood and will serve a mission. Awesome. This week we will have the baptism of Antonio, Fatima's soon-to-be husband. He is old and has hearing problems, but is really receptive to the message, which is cool. The craziest part is that he is 87!

Com Amor,
Elder Burnham
